Rick Steves

Rick Steves writes European travel guidebooks and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio.
Biography
Rick Steves advocates smart, affordable, perspective-broadening travel. As host and writer of the popular public television series Rick Steves' Europe, and best-selling author of over 50 European travel books, he encourages Americans to travel as "temporary locals." He helps American travelers connect much more intimately and authentically with Europe — and Europeans — for a fraction of what mains...tream tourists pay.

Over the past 20 years, Rick has hosted over 100 travel shows for public television, and numerous pledge specials (raising millions of dollars for local stations). His Rick Steves' Europe TV series is carried by over 300 stations, reaching 95 percent of U.S. markets. Rick has also created two award-winning specials for public television: Rick Steves' European Christmas and the ground-breaking Rick Steves' Iran. Rick writes and co-produces his television programs through his company, Back Door Productions.

Rick Steves also hosts a weekly public radio program, Travel with Rick Steves. With a broader approach to travel everywhere, in each hour-long program Rick interviews guest travel expert, followed by listener call-ins. Travel with Rick Steves airs across the country and has spawned a popular podcast. Rick has also created a series of audio walking tour podcasts for museums and neighborhoods in Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, London and Athens. Rick self-published the first edition of his travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door (now updated annually), in 1980. He has also written more than 50 other country, city and regional guidebooks, phrase books, and "snapshot" guides. For several years, Rick Steves' Italy has been the bestselling international guidebook sold in the U.S. In 2009, Rick tackled a new genre of travel writing with Travel as a Political Act, reflecting on how a life of travel has broadened his own perspectives, and travel can be a significant force for peace and understanding in the world. Rick's books are published by Avalon Travel, a member of the Perseus Books Group.

In addition to his guidebooks, TV and radio work, Rick is a syndicated newspaper columnist with the Tribune Media Services. He appears frequently on television, radio, and online as the leading authority on European travel.

Rick took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. By the time he reached 18, Rick jokes, "I realized I didn't need my parents to travel!" He began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a business which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a well-traveled staff of 80 full-time employees. ETBD offers free travel information through its travel center, website (www.ricksteves.com), European Railpass Guide, and free travel newsletters. ETBD also runs a successful European tour program with more than 450 departures — attracting around 12,000 travelers — annually.

Rick is outspoken on the need for Americans to fit better into our planet by broadening their perspectives through travel. He is also committed to his own neighborhood. He's an active member of the Lutheran church (and has hosted the ELCA's national video productions). He's a board member of NORML (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). And Rick has provided his local YWCA with a 24-unit apartment building with which to house homeless mothers.

Rick Steves spends about a third of every year in Europe, researching guidebooks, filming TV shows, and making new discoveries for travelers. Rick was divorced in March, 2010. He lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington, where his office window overlooks his old junior high school.http://www.ricksteves.com/

Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance

The Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance builds brand equity as the leading resource for consumers, media, and trade for knowledge of, and access to the vineyards and wineries of the Walla Walla Valley.

The Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance builds brand equity as the leading resource for consumers, media, and trade for knowledge of, and access to the vineyards and wineries of the Walla Walla Valley.
Walla Walla sits in the foothills of the Blue Mountains in the Southeastern corner of Washington State. The many waters flowing down from the Blue Mountains help provide irrigation for the numerous crops grown in the region as well as add to the beautiful rural landscape. Always closely linked to farming, the Walla Walla Valley has over 1,800 acres of grapes growing next to fruit orchards and whea...t fields, and the area is now home to over 100 wineries with tasting rooms as varied as the wineries themselves

In the heart of this winegrowing region is award-winning historic downtown Walla Walla, a charming, and pedestrian-friendly place with up-scale restaurants, boutique shops, cafés, and tasting rooms. It is home to a rich and diverse arts scene complete with public sculptures, art studios, galleries, theatres, the world-renowned Walla Walla Foundry, and the longest continuously running symphony west of the Mississippi River.

Beyond downtown, visitors will find beautifully kept historic homes in the residential neighborhoods throughout town. These homes date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when Walla Walla was the biggest town in the Columbia Basin and was almost named Washington’s state capitol. Nearby are beautiful golf courses, expansive city parks, and attractions such as Fort Walla Walla Museum and Whitman Mission, both of which tell the rich Native American and pioneer history of the area.

Walla Walla residents are closely linked to the natural environment that surrounds them. Walla Walla has always been an agricultural community, well-known for its apples, asparagus, onions, strawberries, and wheat. The area offers numerous outdoor recreational opportunities with fishing in nearby rivers and lakes, and hiking, cycling and skiing in the Blue Mountains. The largest single wind farm in the United States – The Stateline Wind Energy Center – lies southwest of Walla Walla on the Oregon-Washington border. Through VINEA – The Winegrowers’ Sustainable Trust – local growers and vintners are working together to minimize their impact on the environment through sustainable, organic, and biodynamic growing and winemaking processes. There is a commitment throughout the Valley to conserve our natural resources and ensure that generations to come will be able to farm and live here.

Walla Walla is home to Whitman College and Walla Walla University, as well as Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology and Viticulture, which offers cutting edge instruction in viticulture, enology, and wine marketing for students passionate about careers in the wine industry. http://www.wallawallawine.com/ https://celebratewallawalla.squarespace.com/

Hmart

Why we do what we do.

There's nothing better than grocery shopping.
You spend time with your family.
Sample a new taste here and there.
Put something in your cart you'd thought you'd never try...
and you find out you love it.
You learn something new about yourself and your
taste buds thank you.
Eventually you walk the aisles and
you grow familiar with a friendly place and it feels like home.

We've always wanted our H mart stores to
make our customers feel good about shopping
there. We take pride in what our stores look like,
and that also means we are meticulous about everything we offer you.
We never skimp.

And as the years go by you remember this... the experience,
the inspiration and all the meals you've prepared and enjoyed.
You smile about it... what could be better than that?

At H mart, this is what we do and we love it.

So we try to keep it fun and always fresh. We are H Mart, short for "Han Ah Reum,"
which just happens to mean
"One Arm Full of Groceries."
We're an Asian-inspired supermarket
started in 1982 in Queens, New York.
Despite our small beginnings,
we have grown because of
our continuous commitment to
the freshest ingredients in all our offerings-
while never forgetting that
value is just as important.
We hope our culture brings you new inspiration and
we look forward to seeing you soon. http://www.hmart.com

Sun Valley, Idaho.

North America's original mountain destination, since 1936, Sun Valley, Idaho has the distinction of being the continent's first ski resort - bringing the magic of the European mountain experience to America. http://www.visitsunvalley.com/

Sun Valley was instantly a phenomenon without peer and has since grown to be both the cultural and athletic hub of the Northern Rockies. From the crisp air atop Bald Mountain to the quaint shops and restaurants below, there is no other place quite like Sun Valley, regardless of the season.http://www.sunvalley.com/

Sun Valley Magazine

Sun Valley Magazine is the result of a commitment to celebrating life and its many facets here in the Wood River Valley in Central Idaho as paradise, we are not immune to the challenges that affect the outside world, nor, are we critical of the lifestyles of those “less fortunates” who don’t call this Valley home. But everyone needs reminding sometimes of the reasons they live anywhere and it is our position at this magazine that this is our raison de’etres. It gets us up everyday and out asking “Tell me something I don’t know . . .” asking the movers and shakers as well as the workers and families who let us in so we can fill you in on the stories that are the fabric of our life here.

Everyone at this magazine lives what we write about, or knows someone who does. Our goal is to break down the barriers, open eyes, occasionally bring tears, but to always leave a mark on your memory. Our hope is that if you live here too, or just love it here like we do, then some aspect of our magazine resonates.

We don’t claim to be all things to all people, but we are a magazine of the people and written for the people of the Wood River Valley and beyond. It’s a responsibility we take seriously. And it’s one we work hard to perpetuate through all of our publications be it the bi-annual coffee table-worthy Sun Valley Magazine, or our sensible and solution-driven HOME magazine. We’ve created Golf and Hockey magazines for those sports fans and also tackle projects in our custom publishing division that don’t conflict with our mission and high standards, but which allow us to keep bringing you the quality photography and writing that keeps readers coming back.

Although a locally-based magazine, we don’t shy from regional stories—in fact our publications are sold nationally in more than 400 locations nationwide, notably the Boise Airport and Salt Lake International Airport, Borders, Barnes & Noble, Hastings, Waldenbooks and regional Albertson’s markets, as well as Atkinsons' Markets and local bookstores and gift shops.http://www.sunvalleymag.com/

That's what it takes in this business—passion, and a little luck.http://www.kimberleycameron.com/

Pelican Brewing Company

What's more important--the beer or the food? We say both. In fact, The Pelican Pub & Brewery is a world leader in the pairing of food and beer. After all, we've been doing it for 16 years.  Our executive chef and brewmaster make it their daily mission to understand how food and beer flavors complement one another.
This means not only how the beer pairs with the food, but how to incorporate beer into preparing menu items in order to achieve the most flavor.  This could be the Kiwanda Cream Ale batter in our famous Tower of Rings, the Beer Blanc sauce that tops our blackened cod or the brownie sundae made with Tsunami Stout.  Whatever you order, there has been thought put into how our beer can be integrated into the dish to create a unique culinary experience. In addition to the menu items cooked with the beer, all our menus feature recommended pairings so you'll know what to order with what.
And if you really want a treat of a lifetime, attend one of our three annual Brewers Dinners, which take you on a five-course culinary journey of beer and food complete with commentary by our internationally-acclaimed Brewmaster, Darron Welch.http://www.yourlittlebeachtown.com/pelican

Walla Walla

The Walla Walla Valley is a place where scenic beauty, incredible wineries, enticing restaurants, cultural inspiration, outdoor adventures and small town friendliness come together to create an experience you’ll want to share again and again.
A vibrant reflection of the past and the present, downtown Walla Walla is the place where you begin to discover what makes Walla Walla so special. A walk down tree-lined streets reveals a funky mix of vintage shops, boutiques, cafes, bookstores, tasting rooms, restaurants and more. Add in the numerous pieces of public art and special events, like Feast Walla Walla, the seasonal Farmers Market and outdoor concerts, and you start to see why our downtown has been recognized time and again as one of the best small town Main Streets in the country.
Walla Walla has long been known as one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the nation, producing such crops as wheat, asparagus, strawberries and the famous Walla Walla Sweet Onions. However, it’s as wine country that Walla Walla is most celebrated. With more than 100 wineries representing a wide range of varietals, it doesn’t take long to see why.
Walla Walla Wine Country offers the rare opportunity to experience not only world-class wines but to meet the winemakers, vintners, and family members carrying on the wine tradition. No one is in a rush. Conversation is relaxed. Here, tasting wine becomes an entirely different and wonderful adventure. http://www.wallawalla.org/

Squirrel Harbor is a labor of love, and we have striven to keep with green, eco-friendly practices, thus we have used recycled and rescued/ found items to create this space. This is evident in its touches of character and vintage pieces, some hand assembled. Much of it was rescued from the ReStore, or crafted by local artisans. We purchased most items from stores that specialize in keeping our landfills free of excess waste.

Pike Place Market

Seattle’s Neighborhood Market

Created more than a century ago to connect the city’s citizens and farmers, Pike Place Market is a beloved Seattle treasure. Encompassing a nine-acre Market Historic District overlooking Elliott Bay, the Market remains the bustling center of farm fresh, locally sourced, artisanal and specialty foods.  It’s a place where you can “Meet the Producer”—the farmers, butchers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, bakers, winemakers and purveyors who bring their bounty to your table. The Market features one of the largest craft markets in the country, featuring all locally made handcrafted goods. And with more than 200 small independent businesses and a diverse array of restaurants, the Market offers endless opportunities for delight and discovery.

Farmers Market

The Market’s year-round farm tables feature seasonal Washington-grown fresh fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, herbs, flowers and honey. Taste the sweet-tartness of a perfect Braeburn apple, select fresh greens and veggies for summer salads, or pick up a quart of Rainier cherries or luscious blackberries to share. Throughout the year, you’ll find farm value-added products like dried fruits, preserves, beef and buffalo jerky and apple cider.

Crafts Market

Located inside the Market’s historic arcade is one of the country’s largest daily crafts markets. The Market is unique in that the crafts are handcrafted by local artisans- you will find only Washington-made goods here! Discover beautifully crafted ceramics, fashion wearables, jewelry, leather goods, toys, metal sculpture, woodcrafts and more. Craftspeople set up their table displays daily, creating an ever-changing selection of artisanal goods.

Specialty Foods

Explore a world of flavor at the Market’s produce and specialty food stores. Our local purveyors source the highest quality regional ingredients to create handcrafted artisanal foods. Specialty stores such as Market Spice and the Souk carry rare spices and teas from the around the world. Try a sample from one of our many delis specializing in meats, cheeses and special ingredients from the old country. Visit one of the Market’s busy seafood stalls to order the catch of the day, delivered to the Market before sunrise.

Small Independent Businesses

Throughout the Market’s many streets, alleys, lower levels and nooks, shoppers will find small, owner-operated businesses such as bookstores, art galleries, dress shops and toy, comic and magic shops. There are services too, like barber shops and mailing centers. Spend an afternoon getting “lost” in the Market, finding hidden treasures around every corner.

Restaurants

Pike Place Market’s dozens of restaurants and take out counters offer an array of delectable options, from an authentic Parisian bistro to a casual diner serving the fresh catch of the day with a view of Elliott Bay. Market dining is eclectic—one may savor breakfast or lunch at a deli counter, share appetizers in a casual restaurant or bar, or enjoy a romantic dinner for two.

Pike Place Market Community

The Pike Place Market neighborhood is home to more than 350 residents, many of whom are low-income seniors. Walk down the cobblestone street of Pike Place and take a moment to look up. The windows and balconies above the street belong to apartments that are homes to residents who live above the storefronts.
Within the Market are social services that serve the Pike Place Market and greater downtown Seattle community including the Pike Market Senior Center and Food Bank, Pike Market Childcare and Preschool, and Pike Market Clinic.
These services are supported by the Pike Place Market Foundation and her mascot, Rachel the Piggy Bank, a life-size bronze piggybank located under the Market clock and sign.

Governance

A public market like no other, Pike Place Market is managed by the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA), a not-for-profit public corporation charted by the City of Seattle in 1973. http://www.pikeplacemarket.org/

Poggio La Noce

At Poggio La Noce we produce a very high-quality extra virgin olive oil of extraordinary purity. Our product is exceptional because we are serious about our production process and because our terroir yields an extra virgin olive oil with unmatched low acidity, absolutely vital for a smooth, fragrant product.

Our organic extra virgin olive oil is an excellent way of finishing your dish with the healthiest condiment you could find. It completes just about any Italian recipe by giving it more body, smoothness and a natural Mediterranean aroma, which is expected on every table.
We fertilize and care for our 2,000 olive trees exclusively with organic-certified products and prune by hand. With only 2,000 olive trees, Our farm uses traditional picking methodology, hand picking each olive in its prime state of ripeness. Hand picking preserves the intensity of our olive oil due to optimum ripeness of the olive when it is plucked from the branch. In addition, hand picking enables a more accurate selection of the fruit and without damaging the tree.
Once picked, we personally take the olives to the press each evening of every harvesting day to preserve all the fragrance of the olives.
Our olives are pressed within 24 hours of picking, using modern cold press methodology. Pressing our olives immediately after picking helps preserve the intense flavor and full fragrance of the olive oil and ensures the lowest grade of acidity, which is responsible for the smoothness and intensity of Poggio La Noce olive oil.http://www.poggiolanoce.com/index.html

Dunham Cellars

The Winery

Using grapes from some of the finest vineyards in the Walla Walla, Yakima and Columbia Valleys, Dunham Cellars has established an award-winning reputation for their wines. When Eric's first vintage, a 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon was released, it was deemed one of the finest wines made in Washington by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Subsequent vintages and varietals have also earned high marks with both wine writers and consumers. Eric shows his artistic side by creating original artworks for all of Dunham Cellars vineyard designated and special bottlings.

The winery makes its home in a rustic, remodeled World War II era airplane hangar in Walla Walla, and the future looks promising for Dunham Cellars. The family-owned winery continues to increase production and wine varietals, and has planted estate vineyards in prime locations around the Walla Walla Valley Appellation. Dunham wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Trutina (a Bordeaux style blend), Three Legged Red (a red table wine) and the "Shirley Mays" Chardonnay, which is dedicated to Eric's grandmother. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this wine are donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to help fund the fight against breast cancer.

The only thing that will never change at Dunham Cellars is its winemaking philosophy. We will continue to produce premium wines through gentle treatment in all phases of the winemaking process. Eric's goal is to bring something to the bottle he enjoys and is proud to hang the Dunham name on.

Dunham Cellars wines are first offered to our Wine Club Members and then the remaining allocations are placed in restaurants and wine shops in selected locations around the country, as well as Japan, China and Canada. For a full list of retail outlets and restaurants, please contact us directly at the winery. The Dunham Cellars tasting room is open daily from 11am to 4pm. We can accommodate large groups with advance notice.http://www.dunhamcellars.com

Beecher's Handmade Cheese

Handmade cheese from Seattle's Pike Place Market and the Flatiron District in New York.
In Seattle's historic Pike Place Market and New York's Flatiron District, visitors press their noses against the windows to witness a vat of creamy white milk transformed by the expert hands of the cheesemaker. They watch as curds materialize from the milk, and then knit together to create a fine artisanal cheese. Although he is aided in the process by simple machinery, the cheesemaker is crafting... cheese using the same techniques that have been used for 5,000 years.

A cheese lover since childhood, Kurt Beecher Dammeier remembers encouraging his mother to buy premium cheese at a time when processed cheese was overtaking the market; and he recalls his great-grandfather, whose first name was Beecher, purchasing Stilton by the wheel. In his college years at Washington State University, well known for its agricultural programs, Kurt was able to learn about the process of making artisan cheese. Then in 2002, he decided to combine his love of great cheese and passion for pure food and the idea for Beecher's Handmade Cheese was born.

All of Beecher’s cheeses are made right in our cheesemaking kitchens in Seattle and New York, using premium milk from local dairies of Holstein and Jersey cows that have not been treated with bovine growth hormones. Nothing artificial is added to the cheese, making it an authentic, original product.

Beecher’s has received numerous awards and medals of excellence from cheese competitions world wide, including the World Cheese Awards, the American Cheese Society’s Annual Competition, the American Cheesemaker Awards and more.

In keeping with Beecher’s commitment to pure food, Beecher’s contributes 1% of all sales to the Flagship Foundation, founded by Beecher’s in 2004 to provide education about the benefits wholesome eating and nutrition.http://www.beechershandmadecheese.com/

Seattle Weekly

Before Microsoft, grunge, double-tall lattes, Amazon.com, soaring downtown condominium towers, fusion cuisine and a second floating bridge, Seattle was a dreary little blip on America's radar, best known for airplanes, clinical depression, acres of clams and rain -- lots and lots of rain. But really, if you want to trace Seattle's cultural arc, just follow the progression from Rainier beer to microbrews to fine wine to today's downtown mash-up where they all coexist. And the publication that's done the smartest, street-to-suite chronicling of this spectacular metamorphosis: Seattle Weekly.

Founded in 1976 by an arts-starved East Coast transplant named David Brewster, the award-winning Seattle Weekly has taken on as many faces as the city it covers through the course of time. But one thing has remained constant: stellar, engaging journalism that exposes municipal malfeasance just as often as it celebrates the wizards behind our civic curtain. Pair that with top-shelf music and arts coverage -- as well as Seattle's only medical marijuana column, "Toke Signals" -- and it's no wonder Rainier drinkers and oenophiles alike have made picking up Seattle Weekly a priority every week for over 30 years.http://www.seattleweekly.com/
