Squirrel Harbor melts away the tension of city life, while still situated close to downtown Bellingham and within 30 miles to the US/Canada border. The location is central to all the outdoor adventures Whatcom County has to offer, and within 5 minutes to Lake Whatcom’s shore activities. Bellingham is the gateway to the North Cascades, San Juan Islands Inside Passage, Mt. Baker recreation area, and... British Columbia, Canada.
Within a short drive of the house are walking and hiking trails, lake activities, a beautiful golf course. Within a 10 mile radius are several local restaurants & wineries, plus shopping at Bellingham’s sizable retail core. We provide maps and suggestions for you. This is a perfect spot to stay when coming back from a long day skiing or snowboarding the slopes of Mt. Baker. We are 8.2 miles from Interstate 5 in central Bellingham, about a 15 minute drive, and 42.7 miles away from the Mt Baker Recreational Area, which takes one hour on Hwy 9 & Hwy 542 from our home.
While here, you are tucked in among 100 foot cedars & pines, giving you a romantic, tree house-like atmosphere. You are gently woken by the sounds of nature, including our resident majestic raven we named Hank. This mature forest features not only a wide variety of birds, but also mammals ~ families of deer, our namesake Douglas squirrels, and the wonderful deep hoots of our Great Horned & Barred Owls in the evenings. Squirrel Harbor is a labor of love, and we have striven to keep with green, eco-friendly practices, thus we have used recycled and rescued/ found items to create this space. This is evident in its touches of character and vintage pieces, some hand assembled. Much of it was rescued from the ReStore, or crafted by local artisans. We purchased most items from stores that specialize in keeping our landfills free of excess waste.
This lovingly assembled upcycled cottage room is a tranquil environment with all the comforts of home.
Amenities include:
- Plush Queen size pillow-top bed with comfy bedding
- Compact kitchen with ceramic stove top, coffee maker, microwave & full size fridge
- Private entrance and three sides that face the outdoors, with no neighbors in sight.
- Free wireless internet, note: not high speed due to location*
- An eco-friendly covered hot tub that’s a short walk from your doorstep nestled within its own custom-built tree house, making it comfortable and covered in all seasons.
- Starbucks coffee & breakfast cookies
- Local organic eggs from our neighbors flock of happy, free-range hens
- A fire circle for roasting marshmallows and cozy fireside chats
